Event Details
Peer Gynt is rowdy, charismatic, outrageous. He begs for more: more life, more joy, more fun. Director and writer Bill Barclay brings his acclaimed adaptation of Grieg’s Peer Gynt to the Stifel Theatre. In this fully staged performance, the SLSO and Chorus are joined by actors, puppets, and sets. Come for the laughs and loves, but stay for the otherworldly beauty of soprano Camilla Tilling’s voice. A theatrical experience like no other.
Things to Know
- Bill Barclay reinterprets the music of the past for our time. This director, writer, and composer was Director of Music at Shakespeare’s Globe for many years. It was there that he first united music and drama for the concert stage.
- Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling, a regular guest with many of the world's leading orchestras, does double duty: singing the role of Solveig in Norwegian and speaking the dialogue in English.
- Considered one of the founders of modern theater, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen abandoned verse after Peer Gynt and became known for dramas—including An Enemy of the People, A Doll's House, Hedda Gabler, and When We Dead Awaken—that examined harsh realities behind society’s polite facades.
